Reaction Paths in the Kolbe Synthesis - ResearchGate

Aspirin blocks an cyclooxygenase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins, thus relieving pain and fever caused by prostaglandins.
The Kolbe synthesis is the heating of sodium phenolate with carbon dioxide under pressure then treating it with sulfuric acid to form salicylic acid.
Aspirin belongs to the class of analgesics known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAID.

Jens Weiguny was born in Dillenburg, Germany, in 1964. He studied chemistry from 1985 to 1990 at the Westfälische Wilhelms Universität Münster and received his Ph.D. in 1993 in organic chemistry under the supervision of Professor H. J. Schäfer. His Ph.D. thesis was in the field of the synthesis of prostaglandine precursors by mixed Kolbe electrolysis. Since 1993 he has worked as a Research Chemist in Corporate Research at Hoechst AG in Frankfurt in the area of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis.

Kolbe Electrolytic Synthesis; Crum Brown-Walker Reaction H

The Kolbe reaction was first carried out in 1849 and has been used since in organic synthesis.

The key compound in the synthesis of aspirin, , is prepared from phenol by a process discovered over 100 years ago by the German chemist Hermann Kolbe. In the (also known as the ) sodium phenoxide is heated with CO2 under pressure and the reaction mixture is subsequently acidified to yield salicylic acid.
