Or Ordentlich is an information theorist and Postdoctoral Fellow at MIT hosted by Professor Yury Polyanskiy. Prior to this he was a PhD student at Tel-Aviv University. His thesis “Structured Codes for Wireless Communication” was written under the supervision of Prof. Uri Erez. His main research interests are in the fields of Information Theory, Communication Theory and Signal Processing. In particular, he is interested in the problem of communication in the presence of interference, which is related to all three fields.

Lastly, we research the problem of crowd-based ranking via pairwise comparisons, with humans as unreliable comparators. We formulate this as the problem of approximate sorting with noisy comparisons. By developing a rate-distortion theory on permutation spaces, we obtain information-theoretic lower bounds for the query complexity of approximate sorting with both noiseless and noisy comparisons. Our lower bound shows the optimality of certain existing algorithms with respect to noiseless comparisons and provides a benchmark for approximate sorting with noisy comparisons.

Yury Polyanskiy - People | MIT LIDS

Yury Polyanskiy joined MIT on July 1, 2011 as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and a member of LIDS. Yury received the MS degree in applied mathematics and physics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 2005 and the PhD degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University in 2010. In 2000-2005 he led development of the embedded software in the Department of Surface Oilfield Equipment, Borets Company LLC. His thesis work initiated a systematic approach to studying impact of finite delay constraint on information theoretic fundamental limits. The accompanying journal paper won the 2011 Best Paper Award from IEEE Information Theory Society.

Yury Polyanskiy has been selected to hold the Robert J. Shillman (1974) Career Development Professorship of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, as announced by EECS Department Head Anantha Chandrakasan.
