During photosynthesis, what gas do plants release? …

I have koi in outside fish ponds. At times during the long summer days there is an occurrence called an algae bloom where the water in the pond becomes filled with very small suspended algae. During the day there is no problem with the respiration of the koi that I have in the pond… but because the algae use up so much available oxygen during the night and do not add any O2 to the water…my koi in the very early morning hours before the sunlight starts photosynthesis of the algae run out of the amount of oxygen they need for respiration and are forced to breathe atmospheric O2 at the surface of the pond! They gasp for O2 out of the water from the atmosphere where there is enough available for them to survive. My point is in water ponds there is a semi closed environment where plants can use up so much oxygen at night that they force the fish to get their oxygen elsewhere. When days become shorter the algae bloom will naturally diminish if I wait it out and do not do massive water changes or resort to killing the floating algae with a chemical plant killer algaecide that will not kill my fish if used in the proper doses. Plants do use O2 at night and do not give off any O2 in darkness!

During photosynthesis plants release CO2

At night, when photosynthesis can’t take place, plants continue to consume oxygen but they don’t release any back into the room. Would that mean that plants really do compete with humans for oxygen?

Plants also release oxygen as a …

A world without plants would be a world without oxygen, uninhabitable for us and for many creatures. We know plants release oxygen by absorbing carbon dioxide and breaking down water using sunlight through the process of photosynthesis. However, we know little about the mechanics of how plants create oxygen during photosynthesis. A breakthrough that will help advance our understanding of this critical ecological process was made recently by scientists at LSU.

Bricker has spent about 30 years of his career studying cellular plant biochemistry and the different components that enable plants to perform photosynthesis. A graduate student in his lab, Manjula Mummadisetti, led this latest study that examined the cellular system responsible for creating oxygen during photosynthesis called Photosystem II. She analyzed two proteins that are critical to creating oxygen and modeled how they connect and interact, building upon previous information and her latest research. Their paper, titled "Use of protein cross-linking and radiolytic footprinting to elucidate PsbP and PsbQ interactions within higher plant Photosystem II" will be published this week online in the .

All plants and animals on earth engage in a process called respiration. Respiration combines oxygen and the food created during photosynthesis to produce usable energy.

These kinds of observations led Priestley to offer an interesting hypothesis that plants restore to the air whatever breathing animals and burning candles remove - what was later coined by Lavoisier "oxygen".

In these experiments, Priestly was the first to observe that plants release oxygen into the air - the process known to us as .

Does plants emit O2 during the night? | Plants - Quora

Plants make their own food by photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide and water react together in the presence of light and chlorophyll to make glucose and oxygen. The glucose is converted into starch, fats and oils for storage. It is used to make cellulose for cell walls, and proteins for growth and repair. It is also used by the plant to release energy by respiration.

However, during the day, the amount of oxygen plants release as part of photosynthesis makes the amount of oxygen they consume for respiration seem negligible.

Does plants emit O2 during the ..

Stanford, CA -- During the daytime, plants convert the Sun's energy into sugars using photosynthesis, a complex, multi-stage biochemical process. New work from a team including Carnegie's Mark Heinnickel, Wenqiang Yang, and Arthur Grossman identified a protein needed for assembling the photosynthetic apparatus that may help us understand the history of photosynthesis back in the early days of life on Earth, a time when oxygen was not abundant in the atmosphere. Their work is published by .

I'l bet you are wondering that because you alreadyknow that plants can make oxygen. You probablyalready know that in photosynthesis, plants takeCO2 from the air, Water(H2O) from their roots, and energy fromthe sun and make sugar(C6H12O6). Whata lot of people don't realize is that when there'slittle or no light, plants do the same thing wedo. The break down the sugar to releaseCO2, water, and energy. This requiresoxygen. The reason is pretty complex, butbasically, electrons get passed around, and oxygenhas to pick them up at the end of the process.
If you measured the amount of oxygen andCO2 dissolved in a lake, how do youthink the daytime levels would compare to thenighttime levels?
Would a plant need oxygen ifit were under lights 24 hours a day?

Why Do Plants Need Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

I’m actually curious about this – Because over-planting a small pond, and having the plants use up too much oxygen during the night to the point that the fish die or are gasping for air at the surface by morning because of it, is a not uncommon problem. Would you know why there is such a difference? Like do aquatic plants have higher oxygen usage in a lower oxygen environment, perhaps, or it’s a more enclosed space with much higher percentage of plants per area, or something else?
