Photosynthesis reduces the affect of global warming

We show the urgent need to act in order to be able to mitigate global warming. For this purpose, we simulate different scenarios for the future emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and calculate their effect on the rise of the average temperature on Earth.

Climate change is threatening three key ingredients needed to make beer: Water, barley and hops.

The Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming ..

The continual increase in this carbon dioxide fraction is considered to be the main contributor to the global temperature increase known as global warming. Such values are a first in human history and likely represent the highest carbon dioxide fraction in our atmosphere in at least the last 800,000 years. It is high time that we had a sober, data-driven discussion about the hazards presented by this dangerous trend. Analytical, skeptical science has to be central to this discussion.

Not all effects of climate change can be anticipated, and not all effects that are anticipated may come to pass, but the number of expected, negative impacts on human society present a clear and worrying danger. Some of these impacts are already being felt, to varying degrees, although many will not seriously present themselves until temperatures increase by 2°C or more (although we have already committed to more than 1.4°C of warming, depending on actual climate sensitivity).

Global Warming: Will Human-Induced Climate Change …

Scientists have established that climate change greater than 2°C (4°F) will likely be extremely dangerous. We are likely to have committed our planet to that degree of warming when atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations reach 450 ppm (parts per million). The natural, pre-industrial level of carbon dioxide (CO2) was around 285 ppm. The level of CO2 is currently near 400 ppm.

I have been struggling to understand exactly how increasing CO2 levels leads to global warming using basic physics, and the story is complex. The trapping of certain bands of infrared radiation emitted from the Earth by greenhouse gases is well known. The effective cross-section of CO2 of absorption for CO2 in its rotational bands is also well known (HITRAN). Using the current concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere it is also clear that essentially all the radiation emitted by the surface in these bands is already absorbed by CO2 at pre-industrial levels. In fact spectra from space show that the main CO2 bands are saturated in the lower atmosphere with minimal emission from the high atmosphere. The absorption of radiation follows a logarithmic law with distance assuming a uniform concentration of CO2 in air. All that happens if you double the concentration of CO2 in air is that the absorption length is halved. So more radiant energy is absorbed and reflected back to earth at lower levels of the atmosphere than before. However the total energy balance would appear at first sight to be almost unchanged. In fact just such an experiment was performed by Herr. Koch and led Angstrom to dismiss theories of man induced warming already back in the early 20th century (Realclimate: ).
