Advanced Organic Reactions (Lecture notes) Carmelo J
This module introduces geography and environmental science students to key quantitative and qualitative research methods and GIS. These include mapping, spatial analysis, interviewing, questionnaire design, survey methods, and descriptive and inferential statistics. Lectures are combined with regular computer lab-based practical sessions in order to understand the theories behind different methods and learn how they can be applied in geographical and environmental research. As part of this practical element, students will receive training in the use of MS Excel, IBM SPSS Statistics and ArcGIS to manipulate and analyse data.
This module is designed to support first year students in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science through the transition from school to university. It will provide students with the opportunity to work with others to develop and share basic practical skills that underpin many EECS first year modules, foster a sense of enquiry and intellectual curiosity, develop basic graduate attributes that underpin effective student learning, and prepare and encourage students to obtain some work / voluntary experience at an early stage in order to enhance their employability.

The role of chemistry in materials science. The module will begin with the description of chemical bonding in atomic systems. Students will be given an understanding of how atomic orbitals are derived and what they actually mean. This will be used as a basis to explain group and period behavior in the periodic table. This will be developed further into molecular bond systems such as hybrid bonding (Sp3, Sp2 etc) as well as very basic descriptions of molecular orbital theory. Students will learn how to use these concepts to define molecular shape and behavior. Students will also learn how these shapes and bond types are important in chemical reactions that form materials, for example polymer synthesis. This will be done by providing a discussion on basic organic chemistry reaction mechanisms. The module will continue to show how bonding changes in materials, band theory will be introduced and described using semiconductor materials as an example. Unusual behaviors which are the result of quantum effects on bonding will also be described, for example quantum dots.
There are distinct differences between academic and applied industrial research projects. This module will prepare students to work effectively as industrial engineers. The 36 hours of lectures will cover project management frameworks, problem-solving techniques, intellectual property, technology strategy and roadmapping, metrics and statistics, technical writing and ethical considerations. External experts will be invited to give talks. This module will be assessed using three elements of compulsory coursework, there is no final exam.

This module will introduce SEFP students to basic electronics, with a focus on digital and programmable systems. This module follows on from SEF034 Computing, which introduces basic programming skills and seeks to look below the abstract level at which most computers are programmed and ask 'how are computers created?'.
This module aims to develop your understanding of the role of literary texts in producing and contesting modern urban experience. By exploring a selected body of novels and other texts (short stories, letters, essays), considered with reference to the changing environment of London, we shall explore together how writers have imagined the modern city in the context of (for example) war and the Blitz, urban crime, class conflict, the relationship between suburbs and city, and the changes wrought by the end of the British empire, postwar immigration, and ongoing social and cultural change. We will explore both dystopic future and historical past revisionings of the city; and consider the ways in which London has served as a site, over the past century, for writers to consider or contest changing notions of Britain and Britishness. We will consider how theoretical approaches to the city can also help us read urban texts. The module aims to develop skills in the literary analysis of texts in relation to place, both in writing and in group discussion, and to develop critical thinking and the effective communication of ideas and argument.

The module consists of two parts, each of fundamental importance for any serious approach to Computer Science: Logic and Discrete Structures. Logic has been called the Calculus of Computer Science. It plays a very important role in computer architecture (logic gates), software engineering (specification and verification), programming languages (semantics, logic programming), databases (relational algebra and SQL the standard computer language for accessing and manipulating databases), artificial intelligence (automatic theorem proving), algorithms (complexity and expressiveness), and theory of computation (general notions of computability). Computer scientists use Discrete Mathematics to think about their subject and to communicate their ideas independently of particular computers and programs. They expect other computer scientists to be fluent in the language and methods of Discrete Mathematics. In the module we consider Propositional logic as well as Predicate Calculus. We will treat Propositional Logic and Predicate Calculus as formal systems. You will learn how to produce and annotate formal proofs. As application we will briefly consider the programming language Prolog. This module will also cover a variety of standard representations, operations, properties, constructions and applications associated with selected structures from Discrete Mathematics (sets, relations, functions, directed graphs, orders).
